As the 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6 deadline to file an intention to run looms, the Town Clerk and Lincoln-Sudbury District Clerk have plans in place in case of inclement weather Thursday.
The wintry weather predicted for Thursday could close the schools and town offices. Town Clerk Beth Klein noted that the deadline to pull papers cannot be extended, so those wishing to file an intention to run must do so by 5 p.m. Thursday. L-S District Clerk Casey Friend added that, if school is cancelled, people wishing to pull papers may do so at the Town Clerk’s office. If town offices are also closed, Klein said that those wishing to pull papers before the deadline should reach out to her via email at clerk@sudbury.ma.us.
The ballot for the March 31 Annual Town Election is still not set. For the Planning Board, only one candidate has filed for two open seats. For the Board of Assessors, Goodnow Library Trustees, Sudbury School Committee, and Lincoln-Sudbury Regional District School Committee, five people have filed their intention to run but have not yet returned signatures to qualify for the ballot. They have until 5 p.m. Feb. 10 to do so. And people can still file a last-minute intention Thursday to run for any position on the ballot.
Anuraj Shah is the one certified candidate for Planning Board. Shah is running for re-election. The other incumbent, Justin Finnicum, has not yet filed to run for re-election.
The five people who have filed an intention to run but have not yet returned papers to qualify for the ballot are: Trevor Haydon (Board of Assessors), Katina Fontes (Goodnow Library Trustees), Elizabeth Sues (Sudbury School Committee), Lee Hannauer Gross (Lincoln-Sudbury Regional District School Committee) and Valerie Friedholm (Lincoln-Sudbury Regional District School Committee).
Prospective candidates who file an intention to run and then change their mind can, but are not required to, notify the Town Clerk or L-S District Clerk of their decision. Any of those five people could simply not return their nomination papers, effectively exiting the race.
Nomination papers (“signatures”) must be returned by 5 p.m. Feb. 10.
To appear on the ballot, prospective candidates must file an intention to run, gather the signatures of at least 50 registered Sudbury voters on a set of nomination papers, return those signatures by the deadline, and the Town Clerk’s office must certify those signatures.
There are 14 open positions on this year’s Annual Town Election ballot. Any Sudbury registered voter may run for office. Prospective candidates do not need permission from a board or committee to run.
You can find a complete list of open positions here. You can find information about how to run for office here, and resources to support a run for office here.
